While much of the correspondence i received centred around Sainsbury’s and Tesco, it is a similar story at the rest of the nation’s supermarkets when it comes to online delivery slots. In terms of deliveries, Tesco is currently unable to give slot priority to the most vulnerable. Tesco CEO Dave Lewis said: 'To help free up slots for the more vulnerable, such as our elderly.

  • Tesco is releasing slots as and when they become available, but they are filling up quickly. The supermarket has increased its home delivery and Click and Collect capacity from 660,000 to around.
  • Tesco claims it is reserving 'hundreds of thousands of home delivery slots a week' for the most vulnerable customers. A spokesman said it has already started getting in touch with those people to.
  • Most supermarkets are opening earlier to allow the elderly, vulnerable, and NHS staff to shop before the crowds. Tesco has elderly and vulnerable priority time in store, and is offering special.

Tesco is among the major retailers who have altered its opening hours to allow NHS staff dedicated time in its stores.

The new timings were rolled out across all its stores, excluding its Tesco Express stores, last weekend and will be in place each Sunday during the coronavirus crisis.

Its announcement said: “From this Sunday, and every following Sunday, all Tesco stores (except Express stores) will prioritise a browsing hour before checkouts open for NHS workers.

“Because now, more than ever, #EveryLittleHelps.”

Tesco has many stores located across Liverpool including its Litherland and Park Road superstores.

For other shoppers, it is worth noting a number of Tesco stores are now operating at reduced hours due to 'operational reasons', Tesco said on Twitter after photos showed shelves cleared of food and other essential goods.

Some Tesco Extra stores and larger Metro stores have reduced their hours to between 6am and 10pm so they can properly restock overnight.

CEO Dave Lewis also asked any customers who would usually shop online or Click + Collect if they are able to to 'prioritise' shopping at its stores.

Tesco CEO Dave Lewis said: 'To ensure our more vulnerable and elderly customers can shop in-store, we will prioritise one hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning between 9-10am (except in our Express stores) and ask that customers respect this.'

'To help free up slots for the more vulnerable, such as our elderly customers and those who are self-isolating, we are encouraging customers who shop online or choose Click+Collect for their grocery home shopping, to prioritise shopping in-store where possible.'

Tesco has announced a new initiative which will offer free grocery deliveries for people aged over-65 when they shop online.

The service was launched today to coincide with International Day of Older Persons.

Tesco is the first retailer to implement such an initiative, with deliveries set to operate across the country six days a week from 3pm-7pm Monday-Saturday subject to a minimum spend of €50.

The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD welcomed the project, saying it was 'a good example of combining technology with social good'.

'It is positive to see an age-friendly initiative that aims to assist older people across the country,' she said.

'This Tesco initiative will be great for older people, especially in rural areas. It also means that not having to spend time shopping gives people more time to spend in their communities.”

Ruairi Twomey, Marketing Director, Tesco Ireland said, “At Tesco, we believe that even the little things make all the difference so this new extension of our home delivery service helps older members of our community avail of free delivery of their weekly shopping.

This will be highly beneficial especially as we enter the colder months. This way we can be sure older members of our community get the very best food in the manner most convenient to them.

The Interim CEO of Age Action Ireland, Anna McCabe, said they were 'really pleased' with the initiative, particularly at the start of Positive Ageing Week.
